How to install the DNS ONLY version of WHM on a nameserver

You can install a DNS ONLY version of WHM when you have an extra server or VPS that you’d like to use as a nameserver. This allows easier DNS record management and synchronization across servers. The requirements, installation and use of DNS ONLY are similar to the full WHM version and there is no license requirement to run this version. The amount of processing power or RAM necessary to run DNS ONLY is relative to how many DNS records you have.

You should be using a newly installed operating system as anything on the server may be erased during the installation of the DNS ONLY. You need root SSH access to your server. However, if connecting from a Windows computer, it is recommended to use PuTTY like we do in the VPS tutorial related to this article.

Choose “Session” and begin entering settings into the “Basic options for your PuTTY session” screen. If your server disallows direct SSH connections as root user, then log in as admin and switch users to root. A series of steps will complete the installation. See the VPS tutorial “How to install the DNS ONLY version of WHM on a nameserver” within our WHM 11 setup series.
