As a Valve multi-player game, Team Fortress runs off a base server software used by many of the great online multi-player games such as Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead, and Half Life 2: Deathmatch. This software, known as Source Dedicated Server or SRCDS, is available for Windows game server VPS servers, Linux game server VPS servers, or Mac game server VPS servers. All three operating systems have versions available so it is sure to run on whatever VPS hosting type you decide to use.
When setting up a Team Fortress VPS server, it’s important that your host has a good processor, plenty of RAM, a great connection speed, and enough bandwidth to host the amount of players that you will be expecting. To run a good, solid Team Fortress VPS server, a minimum of about 512 megabytes of RAM will do. Once you have a lot of players participating in your games you will probably want to upgrade to a whole gigabyte or even two of RAM. For now, however, 512 megabytes is enough.
Make sure your VPS server has as fast a connection speed as possible. A minimum of about five hundred kilobytes per second is essential if you want to host ten players. For every ten players after that, increase the minimum required speed by another five hundred kilobytes per second. 40 players will require an ultra-fast connection of about two megabytes per second. You will also need to buy a lot of bandwidth. For every ten players you host, plan to use anywhere from one hundred to three hundred gigabytes of bandwidth per month. The more you plan to play the game, the more bandwidth you will need to buy. 30 players will probably eat up around eight hundred to a thousand gigabytes per month so make sure it is worth it to you.
To install Team Fortress on your VPS server, start by getting this handy little tool, HLDS update, from any one of the following sites. For Windows, download HLDS update here and for Linux or Mac, you can download this HLDS update. If your VPS server does not have the latest versions of Steam or AMXMODX installed, you’ll probably want to install them as well. Use the HLDS update tool to download and install the appropriate Team Fortress 2 files via Steam. This will probably take quite a while as it requires downloading and installing nearly four gigabytes of files. Once Team Fortress 2 is downloaded and installed, configure your game server’s time limit and maximum rounds and you’re all set!
