A web hosting company of some sort hosts every web site on the internet. These companies lease spaces for web pages to be showcased. There are three different server options. There are sites that offer shared server hosting, dedicated server hosting, and virtual server hosting. Before making the decision to upgrade one should understand what each server does. A dedicated server is one server dedicated to one website. These are mostly used by those web sites that generate a large amount of traffic or are well established. They require more technological knowledge than the others but offer a lot more control and flexibility.

The dedicated server hosting happens to be considerably more expensive than shared server hosting and virtual server hosting. Shared server hosting is one server that caters to multiple different web sites. Many times this could be in the hundreds. With a shared server you usually get all the technical and customer support you need so it is not required to have an extensive amount of computer knowledge. These come already pre-installed with all software needed which means the website owner cannot install his or her own software. This keeps them limited to what they can do with their page.

Also with a shared server since the resources are shared with so many other sites, if one site is having problems there is a chance your site may be affected. Fortunately, a new type of server is like a happy medium between the other two; the VPS or virtual private server. This server is similar to the shared server as in sharing a central processing unit. The main difference between shared server hosting and virtual server hosting is that the virtual server is divided into smaller, individual servers giving each web site owner their own space. Each space is allotted a set amount of disc space and random access memory.

Virtual server hosting is more expensive than shared server hosting but still less expensive than dedicated server hosting. Also with VPS, the website owner gains many of the same benefits they would have with a dedicated server such as flexibility and more control over what they choose to do with their page. Should you upgrade? If you are currently using a shared server and your page has shown significant growth or you at least expect it to but you do not yet need your own dedicated server than this might be a great alternative to fit your needs.
